Step 4:

Follow the steps below and do not leave until an ambulance arrives.

  1. Open the kit, take one vial out of the medicine bottle, swirl it in circles so all liquid goes the bottom, and snap off the top of the vial
  2. Unwrap the syringe, put the needle in the vial's liquid, and pull up the plunger to draw up as much liquid as you can into the syringe
  3. Turn the syringe so the needle faces up and push the plunger until most of the air is gone
  4. Firmly push the needle into a large muscle on the overdosing person, such as a buttock or thigh. The needle can go through clothing but NEVER into a person's heart
  5. Push down hard on the plunger until it clicks and the needle retracts. If the person is still unresponsive after 3-5 minutes, give them another naloxone injection
  6. Stay calm and wait until an ambulance arrives. If the person wakes up they may not remember overdosing, so explain the situation to them
  7. DO NOT leave the syringe and lying around. Dispose of it in your community's designated disposal box or local pharmacy. If you want more information on preventing overdoses, access our FAQ from the home page
